I had a spinal procedure done in March of 2011 and the facility and staff were both outstanding. The wheels came off when the bills started coming in. I have United Healthcare PPO and chose my Surgeon based on his being in my network. This is good advice for all who read this, but just because your Surgeon is in your network doesn't mean everyone who touches you is in your network. My Surgeon's Assistant, who is his employee, was not in my network. Neither was this Surgical Center or the Anesthesiologist. My out of pocket costs were already horrible and then I got my bill from San Ramon Surgery Center. I arrived at 10:00am, my procedure started around 1:00pm, finished by 4:00pm, and I was in recovery until 7:00am the next morning - a total of 21 hours. They first billed United Healthcare $482,190, realized they made a mistake, and reversed that charge. Then they billed $347,780 - again 21 hours. United Healthcare paid $28,939,31 leaving me with a balance of $318,840.69. Calls to facility questioning the amount were met with responses like "Have you met your deductible?" and "The equipment they use is very expensive". All this with a completely straight face. It seems like a cruel joke where no one knows the punch line. To add insult to injury, my procedure left me in worse condition than when I arrived. I failed to get all of the facts up front. Don't make the same mistake I did.
